Daily power cuts lead Yemenis to protest
(MENAFN) According to reports, large-scale protests entered their second day in Mukalla, the capital of Yemen’s Hadramout province, as residents voiced anger over daily power cuts lasting more than 15 hours.
The demonstrations, which initially erupted on Monday, have brought the city to a standstill. Protesters obstructed major thoroughfares, ignited piles of tires, and brought traffic to a halt. The main eastern route into the city was also blocked off, leaving vehicles and transport trucks unable to enter or exit.
Crowds moved through the streets shouting anti-government slogans. Observers noted a lack of visible security presence in areas affected by the unrest.
In a significant move, demonstrators temporarily shut the primary entrance to Mukalla Port and restricted entry to government buildings, including the provincial administrative headquarters. Despite these disruptions, a source familiar with the port’s operations said work at the docks continued.
Authorities in Hadramout had earlier declared that power plants across the region were beginning to go offline due to an ongoing fuel crisis. Many electricity generators are now reportedly out of commission.
