Russian Military Transport Aircraft Goes Down
The An-22 Antey aircraft plummeted in an isolated section of Ivanovo Region, located 360km (220 miles) from Moscow, the ministry reported, noting that search and rescue personnel have been deployed to the site to establish the crew's status.
An investigative team from the Russian Air Force will proceed to the location to examine what caused the crash, the Defense Ministry stated.
Media referenced sources indicating the aircraft went down near the Uvodskoye Reservoir, with wreckage discovered in the water. An unidentified source informed the agency that the incident killed all seven crew members aboard.
The An-22 Antey holds the distinction of being the world's largest turboprop military transport, designed in 1965 during the Soviet Union era. The aircraft boasts a maximum cargo capacity of approximately 60 tons and has established 41 global aviation records. It can carry up to 290 soldiers or 29 crew members escorting cargo across extended distances.
